Measurements to take
- Reach from the pillow to a stable surface
- Floor gap beside the bed and walking clearance
- Distance to an outlet without crossing the route

Edit the job first
A bedside table often becomes storage by accident. List what must be reachable from bed: perhaps water, glasses, a book and a light switch. Everything else can live in a drawer or basket elsewhere. A smaller job permits a smaller surface.
Choose a stable substitute
A sturdy stool with a flat top can serve as a nightstand and move to another room later. A low shelf on an existing bookcase also works when it sits within comfortable reach. If you use a wall shelf, verify the wall, fasteners and landlord permission; a shelf above a sleeping person's head is a poor place for heavy items. Do not stack loose books as a platform for water or a lamp.
Make the cord route boring
Set a lamp where it cannot tip into bedding, then trace its cord to the outlet. Keep the cord out of a walkway and away from heat or pinch points. A plug-in lamp avoids wiring changes, but still needs safe placement. Charge devices on a nonflammable, stable surface and follow their instructions.
Test the evening sequence
Sit on the bed and reach for each item with the lights low. If you need to twist or lean beyond the mattress edge, bring the surface closer or move the item. The finished setup should be easy to use half-awake and easy to clear in the morning.
